Toongabbie, briefly
One of the oldest
Governor Phillip set up a government farm here in 1791, making Toongabbie the third mainland settlement after Sydney and Parramatta. The original site is in what's now Old Toongabbie.
Changing streets
Since the 1990s, many houses have been demolished for apartment blocks, especially around the shops. Separate houses were still 58.8% of homes in 2021.
Three councils
Toongabbie is split between the City of Parramatta, Blacktown City and Cumberland City councils.
A creek that floods
Greystanes (Girraween) Creek runs the length of the suburb and often floods heavily in rain, sometimes onto Station Road. A one kilometre stretch has been channelised to manage it.

Shared roofs and heavy rain

Sydney can get a lot of rain in a hurry: 391.6 mm fell over four days in February 2020. Monier lists blocked gutters, downpipes and valleys among the most common leak sources, so if water only comes in during downpours, start there. Roof leaking in heavy rain goes through the usual causes.
Many of the remaining houses predate 1990, and NSW says homes that old probably contain asbestos somewhere. Get anything that might be fibre cement tested before work starts.
