Roofers in GeelongBay, surf or bush: it changes the roof.
Geelong roofs sit in three quite different settings: suburbs around Corio Bay, the Bellarine's ocean side facing Bass Strait surf, and bush-fringe country towards the Surf Coast. Each one changes what a roofer should check and which steel suits new work. Tell us the job and your suburb. We'll match you with a licence-checked Geelong roofer near you who specialises in that work, and if we don't have one, you'll hear that from us straight away.

What's different about roofs in Geelong?
Coastal roofing rules aren't one-size-fits-all here. BlueScope sorts salt water into three groups: breaking surf, exposed water (open water with onshore winds but no regular surf) and calm water (protected ports, harbours, bays and estuaries). Its table for regional Victoria names the Geelong coastline as calm but the Bellarine Peninsula as exposed, and exposed gets the same roofing distances as surf. So a house on the Bellarine's bay shore may need the same steel as one at Ocean Grove. Near the Geelong waterfront, you've got more choice.
Then there's age. The city grew from the bay shore south to the hill of Newtown and Geelong West, where most houses are single-storey timber: cottages, double-fronted Edwardian and Federation homes, and Californian bungalows. Government housing followed from the 1950s in Norlane, Corio, North Shore and East Geelong. Armstrong Creek, on the southern edge, is still filling up.
And it's drier than people expect. The Breakwater racecourse station averages 510.3 mm of rain a year, spread across 145.3 days, so roofs get wet often without many big downpours. Summer is the harsh part. Geelong recorded 47.4 °C on 7 February 2009, in the middle of a two-week heatwave.
Geelong, area by area
Corio Bay and the inner bay suburbs
Corio Bay is the western arm of Port Phillip and home to the Port of Geelong. BlueScope's TB-35 table names the Geelong coastline as calm water, where COLORBOND Classic and Matt have no minimum distance and ZINCALUME wants more than 100 m. The Bellarine Peninsula is a different story. The same table classes it as exposed, so homes along the bay at Clifton Springs or Portarlington follow the surf distances. BlueScope calls its table a guide only, so get your roofer to confirm the class for your street.
Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads
These two face Bass Strait at the mouth of the Barwon River, so the surf distances apply instead: more than 200 m from breaking surf for ZINCALUME and COLORBOND Classic, COLORBOND Ultra for severe sites, and stainless within 100 m. Ocean Grove's population swells to four times its usual size over the school summer holidays, which is worth remembering if you're trying to book work on a holiday house.
Torquay, Jan Juc and the bush fringe
The Ash Wednesday fire of 16 February 1983 started at Deans Marsh and reached Aireys Inlet, Anglesea, Jan Juc, Torquay and Bellbrae, destroying 578 houses and other buildings. Where land is in Victoria's Bushfire Management Overlay, the Bushfire Attack Level in its Bushfire Management Plan sets the construction standard for new work.
Geelong West, Newtown and Manifold Heights
Timber houses from the cottage, Edwardian, Federation and bungalow years, with Manifold Heights developed in the 1920s. Roofs this old reward a roofer who repairs to match: the same tile, the right flashing, a gutter profile that suits the house.
Norlane, Corio and the postwar north
When the Housing Commission program finished in 1976, Norlane alone had 2,464 Commission houses, some of them prefabricated units imported from the Netherlands and France. Homes of that age can contain asbestos cement, so an old sheet roof or eaves lining shouldn't be cut, drilled or water-blasted until it's been checked.
Armstrong Creek
A growth area planned for 55,000 to 65,000 people. If a near-new roof leaks, raise it with the builder first.
Which roofing jobs come up most in Geelong, and why?
Repairs on older roofs are the steady work: cracked tiles, crumbling ridge mortar and lifted flashings. Start with roof repairs in Geelong.
Restorations suit postwar brick homes in suburbs like Herne Hill when the tiles are sound but the ridge and coating have worn. See roof restoration in Geelong.
Near the water, steel choice is the big roof plumbing decision. See roof plumbing in Geelong and gutter replacement in Geelong.
Gutter cleaning matters most on the bush fringe before summer and on holiday houses: see gutter cleaning in Geelong.
If it were our Geelong roof
Work out which water you face, and how far away it is, before anyone quotes. Within a few hundred metres of the Bass Strait surf or the Bellarine's bay shore, ask every roofer which BlueScope product they're pricing and why, and treat a quote that skips the question as incomplete. Between 100 and 200 m of either, we'd want COLORBOND Ultra, and closer than that, stainless. Along the Geelong waterfront, which BlueScope classes as calm, standard COLORBOND has no minimum distance, so ask to see the reasoning before you pay for stainless.
