Roof area calculatorSquare metres, from the ground.

Measure the length and width of your house from the outside, choose the eaves and how steep the roof looks, and the calculator works out the sloped area of the roof. No ladder needed.

How to measure without a ladder

Pace or tape the length and width of the house along the outside walls. If the house is an L shape, measure it as two rectangles and add the results together. Count the garage if it's under the same roof.

For pitch, compare your roof with the options. Most single-storey brick veneer homes sit around the standard pitch. Older homes with tall, steep roofs are steeper, and skillion or carport roofs are close to flat.

Why roofers care about area

Restoration, painting and re-roofing are often priced per square metre, so knowing your rough area helps you check a quote. Roofers measure properly, including hips and valleys, so expect their figure to be a bit higher than yours.
