What Townsville gutters have to survive
A long list of storms
Wikipedia's list of cyclones that have hit Townsville runs from Sigma in 1896 through Althea, Joy, Sid, Tessi and Yasi to Kirrily in 2024, mostly between December and April. Gutters cop the wind first, because they sit right on the roof's edge.
Clips and brackets
The QRA says gutters can unclip in heavy winds and let water into the home, and that doubling the clips makes them less likely to blow off. The building code already caps bracket spacing at 1.2 m. Ask for closer than the minimum.
Salt sets the material
For eave gutters, downpipes and fascia, BlueScope recommends standard Colorbond or Zincalume more than 200 m from salt marine influence, and Colorbond Ultra more than 100 m. Waterfront homes along the Strand, at Pallarenda or on the island should get the grade checked.
Unwashed undersides rust first
Rain washes the top of a gutter but not the underside. BlueScope's October 2026 bulletin says unwashed areas should be hosed every three months in coastal areas with salt spray. That's a quick job from the ground with a hose.
Choosing the replacement
Lysaght's Quad gutter is the common square-fronted profile. Half round has a curved base that Lysaght says helps it self-clean, with high rainfall capacity. Ogee has a scalloped front that suits heritage homes, like the older houses around North Ward. Our gutter profiles page compares them.
Don't mix metals. BlueScope says galvanised gutters can corrode early under Colorbond or Zincalume roofs, and stainless steel, lead and copper must not be used with its coated steel. Joints should be sealed with neutral cure sealant and sealed aluminium rivets. Read more on Colorbond gutters.
In Queensland, a Metal fascias and gutters licence covers making and installing gutters. Gutter work over $3,300 falls under the Home Warranty Scheme, so make sure that cover is in the price on a whole-house job.
Questions to ask about new gutters
- How many clips or brackets per metre, and can you add more for wind?
- Which steel grade suits my distance from the water?
- Will the new gutters suit my roof material, so nothing corrodes early?
- Are you replacing the fascia too, and is it sound?
- How many downpipes, and is there an overflow path?
- What's your QBCC licence number?
What we'd do
We'd replace the whole run rather than patching rusted sections, ask for more clips than the minimum, and match the steel to the distance from the water. Then we'd hose the undersides every few months. It's the cheapest way to make new gutters outlast the old ones.
Want a roofer to take a look?
Tell us the job and your postcode. We match it with a Find My Roofer certified roofer who specialises in that kind of work, and they call you to quote. Your number goes to them alone.
Send us your suburb and roughly how many metres of gutter, and we'll look for one licence-checked tradie for gutters in your area. Our national page on gutter replacement and the Townsville hub have more.
