Colorbond roofing in TownsvilleHow far you are from the water picks the steel.

For a metal roof in Townsville, two questions matter most: how close is the salt water, and is the profile and fixing system cyclone-tested? Standard Colorbond suits most of the city. Homes within 200 m of the Strand, which BlueScope classes as exposed, need a tougher grade, and Pallarenda or Magnetic Island may too. Where we know a licence-checked metal roofer in your area who specialises in Colorbond, we'll match you with them.

Choosing metal roofing for Townsville

Distance from the water comes first

Lysaght says exposure to sea water and salt spray is the biggest factor in choosing roofing steel, and grades it by distance from breaking surf. BlueScope's simple guide: more than 200 m from breaking surf or exposed water, standard Colorbond. Between 100 and 200 m, Colorbond Ultra. Closer than that, SUPERDURA Stainless.

Bay, beach or island?

Cleveland Bay is partly sheltered from the south-east weather, but that doesn't make it calm water for steel. BlueScope's TB-35 classes the Townsville Strand areas as exposed, so a house on the Strand at North Ward gets the same distance rules as one behind a surf beach. Pallarenda and the island bays, like Horseshoe Bay and Nelly Bay, aren't named, so ask the roofer which BlueScope category they've used for your address rather than assuming calm.

Cyclone-tested, not just strong

Lysaght names northern Queensland as cyclone-belt country. Its roofing goes through NATA-verified Low-High-Low cyclic wind testing and covers AS 1562.1:2018 for wind uplift and water ingress. Concealed-fix profiles such as KLIP-LOK 700 HI-STRENGTH are widely specified in high-wind zones, and Lysaght warns exposed screws or weak fastenings can undermine the whole roof.

Steel inside the house counts too

The building code requires homes within a kilometre of the shoreline to use heavily galvanised or stainless steel structural parts, installed to the maker's specifications and inspected regularly. That covers the straps and brackets you never see, not just the sheets.

Heat, colour and the dry tropics

December at Townsville Airport averages a 31.5°C maximum. BlueScope says light roofs can be up to 35 degrees C cooler on the surface than dark ones in hot sun. CSR Bradford recommends non-permeable sarking in hot humid and warm humid climates, so ask your roofer which suits your house.

Colours near the coast

Colorbond Ultra comes in seven Classic colours: Surfmist, Dune, Shale Grey, Windspray, Wallaby, Woodland Grey and Monument. SUPERDURA Stainless comes in four: Surfmist, Dune, Deep Ocean and Windspray. If you're close to the water and set on a colour outside those lists, ask early, before you fall for it.

Our Colorbond colours guide shows each colour and how hot it runs. Try Surfmist or Shale Grey if you want a light roof that's offered in both coastal grades.

Questions for a Townsville metal roofer

  • Which BlueScope coastal category did you use for my address, and how far is it from the water?
  • Is the profile and fixing system cyclone-tested for my wind classification?
  • Pierce-fixed or concealed-fix, and why that one for my roof?
  • What sarking or insulation goes under the sheets?
  • Who registers the BlueScope warranty for this address, you or me?
  • Which QBCC licence class do you hold for roof cladding?

What we'd tell a friend

Measure your distance to the water before you look at colours. Within 200 m of the Strand, we'd skip standard Colorbond and price Colorbond Ultra, or SUPERDURA Stainless inside 100 m. On the island, ask for an Ultra price next to the standard quote, and pick a colour that comes in both grades. The difference is small next to replacing a roof that rusts early.

Questions

Straight answers.

Is Colorbond good enough for a Townsville cyclone?
The steel is only part of it. What matters is a cyclone-tested profile, fixed at the right spacing with the right fasteners, onto battens and trusses that are properly tied down. Ask the roofer to explain all three.
Do I need Colorbond Ultra in Townsville?
Only close to salt water. BlueScope recommends Ultra between 100 and 200 m from breaking surf or exposed water, and standard Colorbond further back. It counts the Strand as exposed, so the bay's shelter doesn't earn you the gentler calm-water rules. Get the roofer to check your exact address against BlueScope's guide.
Can I just paint my old metal roof instead?
You can, but painting doesn't fix rusted screws or weak tie-downs. If the sheets are sound, see roof painting in Townsville. If they're rusting through, a re-roof is usually the better spend.
