High Wycombe in a few facts

Under the scarp, beside the airport

The suburb sits at the base of the Darling Scarp, directly east of Perth Airport, with Forrestfield to the south and industrial Hazelmere to the north. Perth Airport averages 760.1 mm of rain a year, a little more than Perth Metro's 723.9 mm, while Bickley up in the hills gets 1,096.1 mm.

Named in the 1950s, declared in 1978

High Wycombe was carved out of Maida Vale and officially declared on 2 June 1978. The subdivider, Western Agencies, first used the name in 1958.

Kalamunda's fire notice

Gutters, roofs and walls of all buildings must be free of flammable matter by 1 November 2026 and kept that way to 31 March 2027. Within the asset protection zone, trees and shrubs within 2 metres of a building must be kept under 2 metres high or pruned back so they don't touch it.

Houses, not units

Of the 5,021 private dwellings counted in 2021, almost all were separate houses, and the median age was 38. The Airport line's High Wycombe station opened on 9 October 2022.

Jobs that suit a High Wycombe roof

A spring gutter clean is the one job most homes here need every year, timed for the 1 November date. If big trees hang over the roof, pair it with pruning so the gutters don't refill by Christmas.

Beyond that, it's the ordinary jobs on detached houses: cracked tiles and crumbling ridge mortar on tiled roofs, loose screws and rust spots on metal ones. Roof repairs in Perth covers those.

If the roof might be asbestos-cement sheeting, it shouldn't be water-blasted or walked on. Have it checked before any cleaning.

What you can do, and what to leave to a roofer

You can

  • Check from the ground whether leaves are piling up in gutters and valleys
  • Prune shrubs back from walls and eaves, as the notice asks
  • Clear gutters from a ladder only if you're comfortable and the ground is firm, and never stand on the roof itself

Leave to a roofer

  • Clearing valleys and gutters you can't reach safely
  • Fitting ember-rated metal mesh to gutters
  • Replacing broken tiles or rusted screws

What we'd put in the diary

We'd book a gutter clean for mid-October every year, so it's done before the City's 1 November date with time to spare. If the trees around you drop leaves all year, we'd price metal gutter guards once and weigh that against a few more years of cleaning.

Questions

Straight answers.

When do my gutters need to be clear for the City of Kalamunda?
The current notice says by 1 November 2026, and kept clear up to and including 31 March 2027. It applies to buildings on lots of every size, so suburban blocks are included.
Is it worth having the roof checked when the gutters are cleaned?
Yes, if the person cleaning is a roofer. Ask them to photograph the ridges, valleys and any cracked tiles while they're up there. It adds little time to a visit that's happening anyway, and you get a record of the roof before winter.
