Which part of Lake Mac are you in?
Near the ocean beaches
The city has about 32 km of Tasman Sea coast, with Redhead, Blacksmiths, Caves Beach and Catherine Hill Bay. BlueScope treats breaking surf as the toughest setting for steel: standard Colorbond is recommended more than 200 m from it, Colorbond Ultra more than 100 m, and Superdura Stainless at any distance, measured from the high water mark.
On the lake foreshore
The lake reaches the sea only through the narrow Swansea Channel, so its daily tide is about 0.10 metres, but it rises with the ocean over time. BlueScope's TB-35 table names Lake Macquarie as a calm saltwater lake. Standard Colorbond can go at any distance from calm water, while bare Zincalume should sit more than 100 m back.
Low-lying streets
In June 1949 the lake rose to 1.25 metres AHD, and in the June 2007 Pasha Bulker storm it reached 1.05 metres AHD at Marks Point. Council says the Belmont gauge has risen 3.2 mm a year over the last 37 years. Gutters and downpipes that dump water at the walls make wet weather worse on these blocks.
Old coal villages
Catherine Hill Bay was settled in 1865 for coal miners. Council's heritage plan describes its cottages as single storey with a gabled roof, no eaves and corrugated galvanised steel, on weatherboard or fibro walls. Any house built before 1990 probably contains asbestos, so test old fibro before it's cut.
Bush to the south and west
The Doyalson fire of October 2013 burned over 2,600 hectares around Cams Wharf, Catherine Hill Bay, Lake Munmorah and Nords Wharf and destroyed 4 houses; historic Wallarah House also burnt down that month. NSW RFS says ember attack causes 85% of house losses, so keep gutters and valleys clear before fire season.
Mine subsidence districts
Subsidence Advisory NSW lists districts named Lake Macquarie, West Lake, Swansea Heads, Swansea North Entrance and Mandalong. Adding a roofed patio or an extension inside one needs its approval before work starts, so check your address on the NSW Planning Portal Spatial Viewer.
The jobs that come up most around the lake
Rust on fixings and flashings near the beaches. BlueScope's maintenance bulletin says areas the rain doesn't wash, like gutter undersides and eaves, should be hosed every three months near marine salt spray, against six-monthly elsewhere. See Colorbond roofing in Newcastle and rusty roofs.
Restoring tiled roofs. Most homes here are houses: 85.2% of occupied dwellings at the 2021 Census. There are no published Lake Macquarie figures, so treat these as a guide. See roof restoration in Newcastle.
Replacing old iron and fibro. On the oldest cottages, re-roofing often starts with an asbestos test. Our page on asbestos roof replacement explains how that job runs.
What we'd do around Lake Mac
Tell the roofer roughly how far you are from the beach or the lake edge, and ask them to write the steel product on the quote. On an old miner's cottage or anything with fibro, we'd get the asbestos test done before the quote, not halfway through the job.
Want a roofer to take a look?
Tell us the job and your postcode. We match it with a Find My Roofer certified roofer who specialises in that kind of work, and they call you to quote. Your number goes to them alone.
