What shapes Camberwell roofs
Victorian and Edwardian villas
The railway arrived in 1882 and subdivisions followed the Riversdale and Burke Road tram routes built in 1916. The former Tara Estate in the Prospect Hill Road Precinct (HO159), developed from 1890, is Camberwell's most intact concentration of Victorian and Edwardian houses.
Heritage gradings matter
Boroondara grades heritage places as significant, contributory or non-contributory, and the grading shapes how it assesses planning permits. In a Heritage Overlay, repairs that change a place's look, or don't use the same details and materials, need a permit.
Hills and old street trees
Prospect Hill's slopes give many east to west streets a view of the city. Camberwell City Council planted many street trees in the 1920s and 1930s, and those trees now drop plenty into gutters.
Canopy trees are protected
Under Boroondara's Tree Protection Local Law 2024, removing a canopy tree (a trunk of 110 cm or more around, measured 1.4 m up) needs a permit, even if the tree is dead.
A mix of homes
At the 2021 Census, 60.1% of Camberwell's occupied homes were separate houses, 21.7% townhouses or similar and 17.3% flats. Large blocks being redeveloped often get a two-storey dual occupancy.
The jobs most likely here
Terracotta repairs. Monier says it's not unusual for terracotta tiles to last more than a century, so an old terracotta roof usually needs broken tiles, ridge bedding and flashings sorted rather than new tiles. If you need a few to match, ask about reclaimed tiles.
Rebedding and repointing. Cracked mortar under the ridge caps is a common leak. Rebedding and repointing relays it and keeps the original caps.
Gutters under old trees. Blocked gutters and valleys under mature street trees cause a lot of winter leaks, and they're cheap to keep clear.
Before work starts on a heritage roof
- Look up your property's heritage grading on Boroondara's heritage map
- Ask the roofer to quote matching tiles, ridge caps and flashings
- Ask whether the work changes how the roof looks, and if so, who applies for the permit
- Ask for photos before and after
- Check the roofer's registration on the Building and Plumbing Commission's practitioner search
If it were our Camberwell house
We'd repair a terracotta roof long before we'd replace it. Matching tiles keep it watertight and keep the heritage side simple. If you want a different material, talk to Boroondara before you collect quotes. Then send us the job: we'll pass it to one licence-checked roofer for Camberwell when we have one, or let you know honestly if we don't.
Want a roofer to take a look?
Tell us the job and your postcode. We match it with a Find My Roofer certified roofer who specialises in that kind of work, and they call you to quote. Your number goes to them alone.
