Castle Hill's roofs and setting
From orchards to houses
Castle Hill was known for its citrus orchards. When Patrick White settled here in March 1948 it was the outskirts of Sydney. The orchards and market gardens have since given way to suburban houses, shopping centres and light industry.
Free-standing homes
At the 2021 Census, 73.7% of occupied homes were separate houses. Wikipedia describes the residential areas as almost entirely free-standing houses, with medium density allowed around Hume Avenue since a 2005 rezoning.
Gum gullies
Bidjigal Reserve, 186 ha of bushland, reaches into Castle Hill, Baulkham Hills and neighbouring suburbs, with remnants of Blue Gum High Forest. The NSW RFS says the south-east of The Hills Shire is dominated by Sydney Blue Gum and Blackbutt.
Fire brigades kept busy
The Hills brigades attend over 600 incidents a year, on average 70 of them bush, grass and scrub fires.
The 2007 hailstorm
On 9 December 2007 a storm damaged property across the north-west from Blacktown to Wahroonga, with an unconfirmed report of 11 cm hail at nearby Cherrybrook.
Jobs that keep Castle Hill roofers busy
Gutters, again and again. Monier's maintenance advice is a clean of gutters, downpipes and valleys yearly at the very least, doubling to twice a year where trees overhang. Under big gums, treat twice as the floor.
The right mesh for the block. Where a property meets bushland, the NSW RFS wants gutter and valley leaf guards that are non-combustible and installed to AS 3959. Plastic mesh doesn't meet that. Compare options in our gutter guard guide and on ember guards.
Storm checks. After hail or a big wind, have someone look for cracked tiles, lifted ridge caps and branches on the roof before the next rain. See hail and storm damage.
Two-storey access. Many Castle Hill homes are tall. Safe access with edge protection or scaffolding belongs in the quote, not as a surprise on the invoice.
What to ask before a Castle Hill roofer starts
- Is the gutter guard you're quoting metal, and does it suit a bush fire prone block?
- How will you reach the upper roof safely, and is that in the price?
- Can you send photos of the valleys and gutters so I can see what you found?
- What's your NSW licence number, and which categories does it cover?
Our take for Castle Hill
Under big gums, we'd book gutter cleaning twice a year and fit metal guards once, rather than paying for endless clean-outs. If the house backs onto a reserve, we'd check its bush fire status before choosing the mesh. Tell us what's happening and your postcode, and we'll hand it to one licence-checked roofer for Castle Hill where we have one. No roofer there yet? We'll let you know straight away.
Want a roofer to take a look?
Tell us the job and your postcode. We match it with a Find My Roofer certified roofer who specialises in that kind of work, and they call you to quote. Your number goes to them alone.
