What sits under Canterbury's roofs
Both banks of the Cooks River
Canterbury is 10.5 km south-west of the CBD and spreads across both sides of the Cooks River.
Brickmaking, then the railway
Early work here was wood cutting, carting and brickmaking. The Bankstown line opened in 1895, and the suburb filled with houses after that.
Flats near the station
At the 2021 Census, 62.8% of Canterbury's homes were flats or apartments, 29.3% were separate houses and 47.9% were rented.
Heritage next door
Council says most of its heritage items date from the 1870s to the 1940s and are mostly houses. Ashbury, which shares the 2193 postcode, is a heritage conservation area of Federation and Californian bungalows, and Hurlstone Park has six more.
A slate roof that became cement tile
St Paul's Anglican Church, built of local sandstone in 1858 to 1859 to Edmund Blacket's design, has a steeply pitched roof that was first slate and is now cement tile. It's a reminder of how original roofing quietly disappears.
If your house is listed or in a heritage area
Check the listing
Heritage items and conservation areas are listed in the Canterbury-Bankstown LEP 2023. Council says a listing doesn't stop you making changes; it means new work should suit the house.
Get written advice before minor work
Minor works and maintenance may go ahead without development consent if they don't harm heritage significance, but council wants details first and gives its answer in writing.
Use the free heritage adviser
Council's heritage advisory service is free, and owners of any older building can use it, not just listed ones.
Ask about the grant
Heritage listed properties can apply for up to $5,000 per financial year from council's Heritage Grant Fund toward conservation or repair.
The jobs that come up in Canterbury
Ridge and tile repairs on bungalows. On inter-war tiled roofs, cracked ridge mortar and slipped tiles are common sources of leaks, Monier says. See rebedding and repointing.
Keeping what's original. On a contributory house in Ashbury or Hurlstone Park, talk to council's adviser before swapping terracotta or slate for something else. NSW's exempt rules for replacing roof tiles don't apply in conservation areas.
Shared roofs on blocks of flats. In a strata building, report leaks to the strata manager with photos, since the roof is shared. Roof repairs in Sydney covers what's usually involved.
Our advice for Canterbury
If you're in Ashbury or Hurlstone Park, or your house is listed, we'd book council's free heritage adviser before collecting quotes, then send them the roofer's scope for written advice. It costs nothing, and it stops a quick fix turning into a problem with council later.
Want a roofer to take a look?
Tell us the job and your postcode. We match it with a Find My Roofer certified roofer who specialises in that kind of work, and they call you to quote. Your number goes to them alone.
