What does Woodland Grey look like?
BlueScope draws it from inland bush and coastal scrub. In soft light it reads as charcoal; in sun the green shows. BlueScope suggests sandstone, granite, slate or dark timber.
Its palettes pair Woodland Grey with Manor Red over recycled red brick, or use Woodland Grey trims to modernise a Classic Cream roof. Because the undertone shifts, look at a sample in morning, midday and evening light before you commit.
Medium or dark? Why the answer changes
Its published solar absorptance is 0.70, meaning the roof absorbs 70% of the sun hitting it and reflects 30%. NSW BASIX's medium band runs from 0.475 to 0.7, so in NSW it counts as medium. The NCC 2019 bands called anything over 0.60 dark. BlueScope doesn't print either label beside the colour; both are worked out from the figure.
The current NCC 2022 Housing Provisions are a separate test. At 0.70 it's over their 0.64 limit, so a new home in zones 1 to 5 needs the 7 star NatHERS pathway. In NSW, though, BASIX treats it more kindly than Monument or Night Sky.
Coastal roofs and walls
Woodland Grey is one of the 7 Ultra colours, for roofs 100 to 200 m from breaking surf. Walls are stricter. BlueScope recommends standard Colorbond cladding more than 800 m from breaking surf and Ultra from 500 to 800 m, so a clad shed or wall near the beach needs its own check. BlueScope lists Woodland Grey for walls, patios, sheds and water tanks, and it's in the fence range too.
What we'd tell a friend
If you want a dark roof that doesn't look stark against bush or garden, Woodland Grey is a safe choice, and near the coast it's one of the few dark colours made in Ultra. Colorbond is BlueScope's trademark; we're an independent service with no affiliation.
