Roofers in BallinaA river town on the coast, so wind and water both matter.

Ballina's roofs work hardest in summer: the airport station averages 1,764.7 mm of rain a year, and about 40% of it falls from December to March. The town sits at the mouth of the Richmond River, with surf beaches on one side and a floodplain of over 1,000 square kilometres behind it. Leaks, wind damage and salt corrosion are the jobs that follow. Tell us about yours and we'll find a local roofer who specialises in that kind of damage if we have one, or tell you plainly if we don't.

What's different about a Ballina roof?

The wet season is concentrated. March (225.4 mm) and February (223.6 mm) are almost level as the wettest months, and frontal systems that build in the Tasman Sea come straight in near Cape Byron. A roof that stays dry in September, the driest month at 68.1 mm, can leak in March.

Wind can be local and violent. On 3 June 2010 a small tornado at Lennox Head, 11 km from Ballina, severely damaged thirty homes and tipped over seven vans at the Lake Ainsworth Caravan Park.

There's a real mix of homes. About one in five occupied dwellings in Ballina Shire at the 2021 census (20.7%) was semi-detached, a terrace or a townhouse. If yours is one of them, find out who's responsible for the roof before you call anyone.

Ballina's roofs, by what they've been through

The 2022 floods

Ballina was one of the significantly affected council areas in the February and March 2022 floods. On 30 March, during the second flood, a residential estate in Ballina went under.

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, 2025

Ballina was named among the Northern Rivers places affected in March 2025. Across NSW, the SES logged 7,786 incidents during the event, including 90 flood rescues.

Fire on the heath

A 1957 fire swept through Lennox Head without taking a house, as residents sheltered between Lake Ainsworth and the sea. In January 2014 a lightning fire burned heathland north of Lennox Head and smouldered on for about a month in underground peat.

Salt at the river mouth

Two breakwaters were finished at the Richmond River mouth in the early 1900s, and sand building up behind them formed Shaw's Bay. For homes near Shelly, Lighthouse or Sharpes beaches, Lysaght recommends COLORBOND Ultra 100 to 200 m from breaking surf and SUPERDURA stainless within 100 m. Around Shaw's Bay and the river, BlueScope doesn't name a water class, so ask your roofer to confirm.

Flood grants have closed

The Northern Rivers Resilient Homes Program covered Ballina after the 2022 floods, but applications for its raising and retrofit grants closed on 14 August 2026. Don't plan roof work around that money now.

Jobs that come up most in Ballina

Storm and wind repairs: lifted ridge caps, loose sheets and flashings that let rain in sideways. Start with roof repairs, or if it's blowing right now, emergency roof repairs.

Re-roofing near the beaches, where the steel grade has to match the distance from the surf. Colorbond roofing sets out the grades.

Gutter and downpipe work, because a summer this wet finds every blocked outlet. See gutter cleaning and downpipes.

Our take for Ballina homeowners

Get the roof checked before December, when the heavy months start, and ask the roofer to check the fixings on ridges and sheets, not just the surface. Close to the surf, find out what steel is going on before you agree to a re-roof, and get it in writing. If the job follows a flood, settle with your insurer whether it's storm or flood damage before any work starts.
