What fills Ballarat gutters
Avenues of street trees
The council's 2024 neighbourhood study found nearly all the gridded streets of Soldiers Hill and Ballarat Central have avenues of mature to semi-mature trees. Beautiful, but it means a lot of leaves landing on the single-storey roofs below them.
Wind that moves leaves around
Ballarat's mean daily wind run is 470 km, nearly double Melbourne's. Leaves don't just drop under the tree that grew them. They blow across whole streets and pile into gutters and valleys.
Bushland pockets
Black Hill, Ballarat North, Buninyong and Brown Hill have Bush Residential areas in well vegetated, undulating country, with bushland around Canadian and Mount Clear too. Here gutters collect bark and gum leaves, and in summer that's ember fuel.
Damp and cold
With rain on 160.7 days a year and frost from May to September, leaves in a Ballarat gutter rarely dry out. They rot into heavy sludge, and in a cold snap a packed gutter can hold ice.
How often, depending on where you live
| Tree-lined inner streets | Bush Residential pockets | Estates built since 1990 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What fills the gutters | Leaves from the street trees | Bark, gum leaves and twigs year round | Wind-blown leaves, usually less of them |
| Cleans a year | Twice: late autumn and spring | Twice, with spring the one that can't slip | Once is often enough |
| Main risk | Overflow into eaves and fascia rot | Embers landing in dry litter | Blocked downpipes after storms |
| Worth adding | Leaf guard mesh | Non-combustible ember guard | Nothing, if one clean keeps up |
Bushfire prep and the vegetation rules
Much of Ballarat is a Designated Bushfire Prone Area. NSW's Rural Fire Service says 85% of houses lost in bushfires go to ember attack, with embers travelling more than 100 m ahead of a fire, and it recommends clearing leaves from roofs, valleys and gutters before fire season.
Ballarat's council notes that under clause 52.12, owners of homes in the Bushfire Prone Area built before 10 September 2009 may clear vegetation within 10 metres of the house, plus any vegetation except trees within 30 metres (50 metres within the Bushfire Management Overlay). Check with the council before relying on it, but it can help cut down what lands on the roof.
What to ask a Ballarat gutter cleaner
- Will you clear the valleys as well, where wind piles the leaves up?
- Can you flush every downpipe and tell me if one is blocked lower down?
- Do you check for loose brackets and rot while you're working along the fascia?
- If I'm in a bushfire-prone area, can you quote non-combustible guards?
- Are the waste and the sludge taken away?
If it were our gutters
Under the street trees of Soldiers Hill or Ballarat Central, we'd clean in late autumn and again in spring. In Black Hill, Brown Hill or Buninyong, we'd never skip the spring clean, and we'd look hard at non-combustible guards. For the general how-to and ladder safety, see gutter cleaning.
