Roofers in Wagga WaggaBaked in summer, frosted in winter, flooded now and then.

Wagga Wagga roofs spend most of their life in strong sun: the city gets 2,961.5 hours of sunshine a year, and summer afternoon humidity sits around 30%. Then come the exceptions, like the 110.2 mm of rain the airport took on 8 March 2010. Coatings, ridges and gutters are the usual weak points. Tell us what's happening and we'll match the job with a local roofer who specialises in that kind of work if we have one, or let you know straight away if we don't.

What's different about a Wagga roof?

Sun and heat. The early 2009 heatwave brought 13 days in a row over 38 °C, the record is 46.1 °C from 4 January 2020, and the city averages 124.3 clear days a year. That much sun is what fades and chalks a roof coating over the years.

Cold, foggy winters. Fog and heavy frosts are common, the record low is minus 6.3 °C, and July has the most rain days, at 13.6 on average. Tiled roofs go from frosty mornings to blazing afternoons, which is hard on ridge mortar.

Rain that's modest, then isn't. Wagga Wagga AMO averages 571.5 mm a year, with October the wettest month at 55.8 mm, but one day in March 2010 delivered 110.2 mm, beating the old daily record of 104.1 mm from 1966.

Wagga Wagga, suburb by suburb and flood by flood

Turvey Park, Kooringal, Tolland and Lake Albert

Turvey Park and Kooringal grew south of the centre, and in the 1960s housing spread to Tolland and Lake Albert. Homes built before 1990 probably contain some asbestos, so don't let anyone pressure-clean an old fibro roof or gutter.

North Wagga Wagga

Its levee, built in 1982 to a lower standard than the main levee, only protects against floods up to 9.9 metres, roughly a 1-in-17-year event, and it was over-topped in March 2012. For many years the council discouraged development there and prohibited most alterations and additions.

The March 2012 flood

The Murrumbidgee peaked at 10.56 metres on 6 March 2012, 0.18 metres below the 1974 level, and about 8,000 people were told to leave the night before. The main levee on the south flood plain, finished in 1962, was designed for floods expected once every hundred years.

Fire to the south-east

The Pulletop fire in 2006 burnt over 9,000 hectares of farmland about 30 km south-east of the city, with no homes reported lost. The Dunns Road fire of 2019 to 2020, listed against Snowy Valleys and Wagga Wagga, destroyed 182 homes, though the list doesn't split them by council area.

The jobs that come up most in Wagga Wagga

Roof painting and restoration on sun-worn roofs. A tired coating on sound tiles or sheets is a restoration job, not a re-roof. See roof painting and heat-reflective coatings.

Gutter cleaning, timed around the wetter months and checked after downpours. Gutter cleaning in Wagga Wagga has the local detail.

Ridge repairs on tiled roofs, where cracked bedding lets rain in. See rebedding and repointing.

Asbestos checks on homes built before 1990. Is my roof asbestos? is the place to start.

Our take on a Wagga roof

We'd book a roof check in autumn, before the run of wet winter days, and have the ridges and coating looked at while it's done. If the house predates 1990, we'd get any fibro tested before anyone cleans or cuts it. And if you're in North Wagga, we'd ask the council what's allowed now before planning anything beyond repairs.

Questions

Straight answers.

Should I choose a light roof colour in Wagga Wagga?
It's worth weighing if you're re-roofing or repainting. BlueScope says light coloured roofs can be up to 35 degrees C cooler on the surface than dark roofs in hot sunny weather, and Wagga has plenty of that.
How often should a Wagga roof be checked?
Tile maker Monier recommends a professional roof inspection every five to seven years, and gutters, downpipes and valleys cleaned at least once a year. After a big storm, have a look from the ground too.
Do you have roofers in Wagga Wagga?
If we have a licence-checked roofer who covers your suburb, we'll pass the job to them and they'll call you. If we don't, we'll tell you straight away.
