Roofers in TamworthHail is the big one. Blocked gutters make it worse.

In Tamworth, hail is the roof problem that matters most. A 20-minute storm in December 2012 dropped hailstones 'as big as golf balls', hitting South Tamworth hardest, and by early January GIO alone had 916 home and contents claims. In October 2020 it happened again, and hail-blocked gutters sent rainwater into ceilings. Tell us what's happened and we'll match it with a local roofer who specialises in that kind of damage if we have one near you.

What's different about Tamworth roofs?

It's dry most of the time. The airport averages 631.9 mm of rain a year over 83.4 rain days, with November (81.2 mm) and December (78.2 mm) the wettest months. Summer storms bring the occasional heavy downpour, and that's when roofs get tested.

Heat and frost both. Tamworth gets around 20 to 25 days a year over 35 °C, and the record is 45.9 °C from February 2017. Winter frosts are described as 'frequent and often severe', with overnight lows averaging 3 °C, so roofs here swing between extremes.

Old and new side by side. West Tamworth grew from a company town that began in the 1830s, and most homes across the council area are stand-alone houses: 88.1% of occupied dwellings at the 2021 census.

Tamworth storms, and what they did to roofs

December 2012, South Tamworth

At least 20 homes in Coorigil Street were damaged and more than 40 windows broken. By 8 January 2013 one local roofer had inspected up to 80 properties, and GIO expected another 1,000 claims on top of its 916.

October 2020

Golf ball sized hail hit Tamworth hardest. The SES answered 158 calls across Tamworth and Armidale, about 90 of them in Tamworth, mostly for roof damage. Hail-blocked gutters pushed rainwater into ceilings, and some sagged or collapsed.

Floods, November 2008

Torrential rain on 28 and 29 November 2008 flooded Tamworth and Gunnedah, and the area was declared a natural disaster area. The rainy stretch early in the year, particularly January, can also bring major flooding.

Bush fire prone land

Tamworth Regional Council prepares the bush fire prone land map, and the NSW RFS Commissioner certifies it. If your block on the edge of town is mapped, the RFS's general advice applies: non-combustible roofing, sealed gaps, and gutters cleared of litter before the fire season.

If hail has just hit

Stay out of any room where the ceiling is sagging or bulging, because hail-blocked gutters can fill a ceiling with water. If water is near light fittings, turn the power off at the switchboard. For emergency help, call the NSW SES on 132 500, and leave the roof itself to a roofer once the storm has passed.

The jobs that come up most in Tamworth

Hail repairs: cracked tiles, dented or holed sheets, smashed skylights and broken flashings. Hail and storm damage repairs explains what a roofer will check.

Gutter cleaning before the storm months, so hail and leaves can't lock the outlets solid. Gutter cleaning has the basics, and gutter guards can cut the leaf load.

Roof reports for insurance. A roofer's written report with photos makes a hail claim easier to back up. See roof reports and our hail damage claims guide.

Before the next Tamworth hailstorm

Clean the gutters and check the downpipes in spring, before the November and December storms. Take dated photos of your roof and ceilings now, so you can show what changed. After hail, call your insurer before paying for anything beyond making it safe, and don't sign with anyone who turns up at the door that week.

Questions

Straight answers.

Why did hail make my ceiling sag when the roof looked fine?
Often it's the gutters, not the roof. In the October 2020 storm, hail blocked gutters and rainwater backed up into ceilings, some of which sagged or collapsed. Keeping gutters and outlets clear before summer is the cheapest protection you can buy.
Do I need a licensed roofer for hail repairs in Tamworth?
Any roofing work worth more than $5,000, counting labour, materials and GST, needs a NSW contractor licence in the right category. Check the roofer on Verify NSW before you sign, and get a written contract for anything over that amount.
Can you find me a roofer after a hailstorm?
We'll try. If we have a licence-checked roofer covering your part of Tamworth, we'll pass your job to them. After a big storm everyone is busy, so we can't promise timing, and if we don't have anyone, we'll tell you straight away.
