Roofers in Port MacquarieFrequent rain, sudden wind changes, and the river to think about.

Port Macquarie gets rain often rather than in rare bursts: the airport averages 143.8 rain days a year. It's also the northernmost coastal town to get southerly busters, and the Hastings River flooded low-lying streets in 2021 and again in 2025. That makes leaks, worn coatings and blocked gutters the everyday jobs. Tell us what's going on and we'll look for a roofer in your area whose speciality is that exact job, if we have one.

What makes Port Macquarie roofs different?

Rain days, not just rain totals. The airport's 1,416.7 mm a year is spread across a lot of wet days, with March the heaviest month at 176.0 mm. Roofs here rarely get a long dry spell, which gives moss, tired ridge mortar and slow leaks time to build.

Wind from two directions. Southerly busters arrive fast up the coast, and because the town sits on the leeward side of the Great Dividing Range, foehn winds sometimes blow hot and dry in winter and spring. The airport has reached 46.6 °C, in February.

A lot of new roofs beside old ones. Sovereign Hills, which began in July 2010, was expected to hold about 2,500 homes when finished, so young roofs in the new estates sit alongside decades-old ones closer to town.

Port Macquarie's roofs, by what they've been through

March 2021

Evacuations were ordered in low-lying parts of Port Macquarie and Wauchope, and in North Haven, Laurieton, Dunbogan and Diamond Head. Kendall recorded more than 400 mm of rain on 19 and 20 March, and flooded roads cut off the airport.

May 2025

Settlement Point Drive beside the Hastings went under again, though about 250 mm lower than in 2021. The Hibbard Point and Settlement Point ferries were knocked out, leaving the North Shore isolated for several days, and upriver at Wauchope the river passed its major flood level of 6.82 metres.

Lake Innes and Lake Cathie, 2019

By 31 October 2019 a fire south of town had burnt more than 2,550 hectares, and experts feared between 200 and 350 koalas died in the Lake Innes Nature Reserve. That season the Crestwood Drive fire, also in the council area, reached 3,572 hectares by 19 January 2020.

Salt along the beaches, and the river question

For homes close to the ocean, Lysaght points to COLORBOND Ultra between 100 and 200 m from breaking surf and SUPERDURA stainless inside 100 m. The river is less clear cut. BlueScope's calm class covers protected water such as river estuaries, but whether your stretch of the Hastings counts, and how far you are from surf near the river mouth, is something to have your roofer confirm.

Jobs that come up most in Port Macquarie

Leak repairs, usually found after a run of wet days rather than one big storm. Roof repairs in Port Macquarie covers the usual culprits and what they cost.

Restorations on tile and metal roofs that have spent years damp and in the sun. Roof restoration in Port Macquarie explains when it's worth it and when it isn't.

Gutter cleaning, especially on the bush edges around Lake Innes and Lake Cathie before summer. See gutter cleaning in Port Macquarie.

After a flood or storm, be wary of

  • Someone at the door saying they've spotted damage on your roof. The Insurance Council warns that these 'disaster chasers' are often unlicensed
  • Anyone claiming to be sent by your insurer. Insurers won't send a tradesperson to your home without telling you first
  • A trader who wants to start straight away on a deal made at your door. For work over $100 you usually have 10 business days to cancel, and they can't take payment in that time
  • A quote with no NSW licence number on it, or a licence in a different name from the business
  • Pressure to sign before you've spoken to your insurer

Where we'd start in Port Macquarie

Book an inspection on a dry day after the March rains and ask for photos of the ridges, valleys and flashings. Get small leaks fixed while they're small, because in a town with this many wet days they don't stay that way. If you're near the beach and the roof is metal, ask what steel it is before anyone quotes to patch or paint it.
