What decides it in Launceston
Leaves that never dry out
Launceston gets 87.5 rainy days a year, and winter mornings are often foggy. Leaves that land in a gutter in autumn rarely get a dry day to blow out, so they pack down into a dense mat that blocks outlets. A mesh guard stops most of them getting in at all.
Bushfire-prone edges
Under the state's C13.0 code, a council overlay map (or 100 m from 1 ha or more of bushfire-prone vegetation, where there's no map) marks bushfire-prone land. The code targets radiant heat, flames and embers. If your block is on the City of Launceston, West Tamar or Meander Valley overlay, a metal ember-rated guard is the one to look at.
Older gutter shapes
Federation homes in suburbs like Newstead, and Launceston's Victorian houses, don't always have the gutter profile that off-the-shelf guards clip onto. Ask the installer how they'll fix the guard to your gutters and roof edge, rather than assuming it'll fit.
Picking the right guard
For leaves alone, a fine aluminium or steel mesh does the job on most roofs; our page on leaf guard mesh explains the options. On bushfire-prone land, choose metal ember guard with no gaps at the roof edge. NSW Rural Fire Service guidance says gutter and valley leaf guards in bushfire areas should be non-combustible and installed to AS 3959, which rules plastic out.
No guard is maintenance-free. Fine debris and moss still settle on top and need brushing off now and then. Our national gutter guards page covers how each type is fitted.
What to ask before a guard goes on
- Will this guard fit my gutter profile and roof edge, and how is it fixed?
- Is it metal and rated for embers, if my block is on the bushfire overlay?
- Are you cleaning the gutters out first, and is that in the price?
- How much maintenance will it still need here?
- What warranty comes with the product and the fitting?
Where we'd land
On a block that's on the bushfire overlay or backs onto bush, we'd fit metal ember-rated mesh. In town under a big tree, a leaf guard will save you cleans through a damp winter. With a clear roof line and no bush nearby, we'd skip the guard and just book a clean before July.
