Colorbond colours

MonumentThe dark roof that can go near the beach.

Monument is a deep charcoal, close to black, and it's the darkest colour BlueScope makes in its coastal Ultra grade. It suits modern homes and strong contrast schemes. It's also a hot roof, so plan the insulation, and the energy rating on a new home, around it.

On-screen colour is approximate. Always look at a real sample sheet outside.

What does Monument look like?

BlueScope draws it from the dark volcanic rock along the southern coastline. It's softer than pure black, so the roof's lines still read from the street. BlueScope pairs it with rich timber, crisp white and silvered grey.

Its palettes run Monument against pale Southerly, put Monument cladding under a Shale Grey roof, and set Monument Matt beside Ironstone and timber. Ask to see a big sample sheet outside, because a small chip makes it hard to judge how dark a whole roof will read.

How hot does a charcoal roof run?

Monument's published solar absorptance is 0.73 in Classic and 0.79 in Matt. Measured against BlueScope's thresholds, both are dark under NSW BASIX and the older national bands. For a new home in zones 1 to 5, a roof past 0.64 means a 7 star NatHERS rating instead of the elemental checklist.

A dark roof pushes more heat into the roof space, so the layers underneath matter. The government's Your Home guide puts the saving from roof and ceiling insulation at 45 percent or more of heating and cooling costs. Read up on roof insulation before you sign off the quote.

Before you order a Monument roof

  • Check your estate covenant or council for any rules on dark roofs
  • On a new build, ask your builder or energy assessor how the colour affects the rating
  • Confirm the blanket under the sheets and the ceiling insulation
  • Between 100 and 200 m from breaking surf, specify Classic Monument in Ultra, as Matt isn't on the Ultra list
  • On a large single roof plane, ask for every sheet from one supplier and one production run so the colour stays even
  • Decide on trims: matching Monument, or a contrast like Surfmist

Before you lock it in

If you love the look, Monument is a sound choice, and near the beach it's the dark colour we'd go to because it's made in Ultra. Just budget for proper insulation and see a big sheet in sunlight first. One more thing: Colorbond is a BlueScope trademark, and we're not linked to BlueScope.

Questions

Straight answers.

Monument or Night Sky?
Night Sky is pure black, with a figure of 0.95, and is the only core colour without BlueScope's Thermatech technology. Monument is a charcoal at 0.73, and it also comes in Ultra and Matt.
Is Matt Monument hotter than Classic?
Slightly, on BlueScope's figures: 0.79 against 0.73. Both rate as dark. Matt looks softer, and BlueScope says matching Matt trims come in a selected range.
