What does Dover White look like?
BlueScope describes a clean, bright white drawn from chalky sand, ghost gum bark and alpine snow. It joined the standard palette in the 2022 refresh. Next to Surfmist it looks sharper and cooler, without the creamy edge.
On a whole roof it tends to suit crisp modern homes, pale brick and warm timber. It also earns its keep as a trim: BlueScope uses it to sharpen Cottage Green, pairs it with Night Sky for black and white, and sets it against Deep Ocean on Queenslanders.
How cool will it keep the house?
Based on that 0.28 figure, Dover White is light under every threshold BlueScope publishes, and it's on BlueScope's list of cool roofing colours. On a new home it sits far below the roof limit of 0.64 that the building code applies to its simplest compliance path in climate zones 1 to 5.
The only BlueScope roof that reflects more is Coolmax in Whitehaven, at 0.23, which BlueScope's selection guide marks for commercial work.
Glare, neighbours and estate rules
A bright white roof throws back a lot of light, which can annoy neighbours who look down on it. BlueScope points out that solar absorptance measures heat, not glare, and that glare is managed through orientation, pitch, shielding, colour and finish. Dover White doesn't come in Matt, so if glare is the sticking point, Surfmist Matt is the nearest soft-finish white.
Some estates restrict very reflective roofs. Read your covenant, or ask council, before the order goes in.
Worth asking before you commit
- Can I see a full-size sheet outside in midday sun, not just a small chip?
- How far is the house from breaking surf, and does that rule Dover White out?
- If we're inside 200 m, can it be supplied in Ultra on request?
Our take
For a hot inland home that nobody looks down on, Dover White is hard to beat for keeping the roof cool. If neighbours overlook you or you're near the coast, we'd shortlist Surfmist too and choose between the two outside, at noon. We're independent of BlueScope, which owns the Colorbond name.
