Roofers in BundabergRight where Queensland's cyclone coast begins.
Bundaberg roofs deal with heavy summer rain, storms that turn up with little warning, salt air along the coast and, in 2013, tornadoes. The Queensland Reconstruction Authority uses Bundaberg as the southern marker for its cyclone-rated coast, so how a roof is tied down matters here. Tell us the job and we'll match you with a roofer around Bundaberg who specialises in that work, or say so straight away if we don't have one.

What's different about roofs in Bundaberg?
Rain comes in summer and comes hard. Bundaberg averages 997.0 mm a year, with January (167.3 mm) and February (154.1 mm) the wettest months and August the driest at 32.5 mm. Bundaberg Regional Council says severe storms mostly hit from January to March and can arrive with little warning.
Wind is the other question. The QRA's cyclone guidance says coastal areas north of Bundaberg are Wind Region C, where homes are designed for cyclones with 250 km/h winds. Bundaberg sits on that boundary, so don't assume your house is or isn't cyclone-rated. A roofer, builder or certifier can tell you its actual wind classification.
Age matters too. The QRA says homes built before the mid-1980s are generally at higher risk of cyclone damage than newer ones, and that re-sheeting an old roof is the time to check the tie-downs between battens, rafters and walls.
Bundaberg, Bargara and around: what roofs have faced
The Oswald tornadoes, January 2013
On 26 January 2013, three tornadoes spun off ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald and hit Bargara, Burnett Heads and Coonarr, tearing off roofs and smashing windows. At least 17 people were hurt and 150 properties damaged.
The Burnett River floods
Three days later the Burnett reached a record 9.53 metres. Council says more than 4,000 homes were inundated, and parts of North Bundaberg had water up to 3 m deep moving fast enough to scour buildings. The river passed 7 metres again in March 2026.
Salt air at Bargara and Burnett Heads
Bargara sits 13 km east of the city, between sea level and 10 m up, with holiday homes and units along the Esplanade. BlueScope's TB-35 lists Bargara as surf, its harshest class. For homes there near the ocean, Lysaght recommends COLORBOND Ultra steel 100 to 200 m from breaking surf and SUPERDURA stainless within 100 m.
Timber and tin
Council has made parts of some older suburbs with 'timber and tin' houses into neighbourhood character areas, along with the heritage town centres of Bundaberg and Childers. The rules there refer to Victorian, Federation and Interwar buildings, so ask council before changing how an old roof looks.
Bushfire season in winter and spring
Bundaberg's bushfire season runs through winter and spring, and council warns that embers from a big fire can travel many kilometres. Clearing gutters in late winter covers fire season and the summer storms that follow.
The jobs that come up most around Bundaberg
Storm repairs: lifted sheets, broken tiles, loose ridge caps and flashings after a summer storm. Roof repairs in Bundaberg also covers the tie-down question for older houses.
Re-roofing older homes. When an old roof comes off, the frame is exposed, which makes it the natural time to bring battens and tie-downs up to suit the home's wind classification. See roof replacement and Colorbond roofing.
Coastal steel and fixings. Within a kilometre of the shoreline, the QRA notes the National Construction Code calls for heavily galvanised or stainless steel structural parts, installed to the maker's instructions and inspected regularly. Near the water at Bargara or Burnett Heads, choosing the right grade decides how long a roof lasts.
What we'd do in Bundaberg
If your house is older and the roof is due for replacement, we'd treat the tie-downs as part of the job, not an extra, and get the wind classification confirmed first. Near the beach, we'd choose steel by distance from the surf, not by colour. And we'd keep gutters clear from late winter on, because Bundaberg's storms don't always wait for a forecast.
