Roofers in Happy ValleyBush on one side, ageing roofs on the other.

Happy Valley sits around a reservoir ringed by native vegetation, and RAA lists it among Adelaide suburbs a bushfire could reach. So the roofing jobs that matter most here are the ones that keep leaves and embers out: clean gutters, sealed gaps and sound tiles. Tell us what you need. We'll find a roofer near Happy Valley who specialises in that job, if we have one, and if we don't, we'll say so.

What shapes a Happy Valley roof

Bushland around the reservoir

Happy Valley Reservoir is inside the suburb, and the native vegetation around it, plus the parklands and golf courses on its border, give the area a semi-rural feel. Trees that close mean leaves in gutters and valleys most of the year.

A busy fire brigade

The volunteer Happy Valley CFS brigade, going since 1939, answers more than 250 calls a year, major bushfires included, across Happy Valley, Woodcroft, Onkaparinga Hills, Aberfoyle Park and Flagstaff Hill.

Roofs from the first subdivisions

The Happy Valley name was first used for a subdivision in 1959, and more subdivision followed in the 1970s. A roof from those decades that has never been restored has a lot of weather in its ridges and gutters by now.

Almost all houses

At the 2021 Census, 89.9% of homes were separate houses and none were flats, so most owners are responsible for their whole roof themselves.

Which jobs make sense here?

Gutter cleaning before summer. The NSW Rural Fire Service says 85% of houses are lost from ember attack, and it recommends clearing leaves from roofs, valleys and gutters before the bushfire season. See gutter cleaning in Adelaide.

Ember guard on the gutters. NSW RFS planning guidance says gutter and valley guards in bushfire areas should be non-combustible and installed to AS 3959. Our ember guard page explains the difference from plain leaf mesh.

Restoration of first-generation tile roofs. Where the tiles are still sound, rebedding the ridges and sealing gaps also closes the openings embers use. Roof restoration in Adelaide covers what's included.

Before summer in Happy Valley

We'd check the bushfire overlay for the address first, then book a gutter clean for late spring every year rather than waiting for them to overflow. If the guards are plastic or the ridge mortar is crumbling, we'd have both sorted in the same visit, because both give embers a way in.

Questions

Straight answers.

How do I know if my Happy Valley home is in a bushfire overlay?
RAA points homeowners to the Planning and Design Code's Hazards (Bushfire) Overlay, where you can enter your address, and to the CFS. If you're in the overlay, ask any roofer quoting a re-roof how they'll meet the bushfire rules.
Will gutter guards make my house bushfire-proof?
No. Guards help, especially non-combustible ones, but they still collect leaves on top and need clearing. Monier suggests cleaning gutters, downpipes and valleys at least once a year, and twice in tree-lined areas like this one.
